Two breads - Everyone's Tale
The concept of "two breads" (often referred to as "do roti" in Hindi) frequently comes up in daily conversations in India. Whenever I answer a call or meet my friends, the conversation usually starts with a casual "How’s everything?" To this, I always respond, "In search of two breads: one I have got, and the other I’m still seeking." While my friends are familiar with this response, they tolerate it in exchange for the chance to share their favorite catchphrases.
Today, I want to delve deeper into the idea of the two breads and clarify its meaning. I hope many of you will find it relatable, as it reflects my own life journey.
The first bread symbolizes our basic needs: food, shelter, clothing, and adequate medical care. These are essential for survival, and our ancestors strove to secure them, though some people are still working towards achieving these necessities. I hope they will reach that goal as well.
The second bread represents our wants, which are virtually limitless. It often begins with desires for the latest smartphones, designer shoes, high-end clothing, luxury watches, frequent vacations, sports cars, and sea-view penthouses. Even if one attains enlightenment and moves past materialistic cravings (assuming people do get enlighten and get over with their materialistic desire) or die ,the list keeps growing.
My point is that while I have managed to meet my basic needs, I am still striving to fulfill the endless list of wants. This is true for many others I know as well.
To my friends and readers, the concept of these two breads applies to all of us. Remember, securing the first bread is no easy feat. If you are pursuing the second bread, consider yourself fortunate to experience it. However, if you are focused on the first bread, give it your utmost effort, as it is crucial for you and your family.
